Reflection | 12 Months Of Monitoring

Fenway Focus Blog | Reflection | 12 Months Of Monitoring

We begin this post with a paragraph from our last post:

‘Were we fully prepared to begin measuring our carbon footprint in October 2022? Were we fully aware of the implications of making our carbon reduction commitments at that time? Will our first 12 months of data be perfect? In all cases, the answer is no. However, we are convinced, now more than ever before, that it was essential to just get started.’

As our first 12 months of carbon emissions monitoring comes to an end, we take time to reflect on some of the high-level conclusions that we are instantly able to draw.

Firstly, data is key. Obvious, perhaps, but worth a mention. Until we started to gather the details of our current carbon emissions, we could have no way to understand the nature or scale of the challenge that we faced.

Secondly, data is never enough. This is true in two senses. As soon as we began to collect our carbon emissions data, we realised that it would never be sufficiently nuanced for long-term management and planning. We quickly became aware that in the short- to mid-term, better data would be needed. This is something that we will begin to address once our baseline data has been finalised. We also began to recognise that data in isolation is of limited merit. Our data had to be collected, viewed and analysed in context of an overall drive to improve and in context of our core values and goals.

Finally, progress can be painful. Client satisfaction has to be our absolute priority at all times and balancing the best interests of our clients and a clear path towards nett zero is challenging, particularly to begin with. Whilst we had been evaluating prospective products on the basis of their environmental credentials for some time, true commitment to emissions reduction requires determination and, at times, courage.

Our first 12 months of emissions monitoring ends later this month, October 2023, and we will shortly set out the timeline for our first reporting.
