Reflection | Progress Over Perfection

Fenway Focus Blog | Reflection | Progress Over Perfection

As we near the end of our first 12 months of monitoring our carbon footprint, and in advance of sharing our first update on our baseline data and our progress so far, we take a moment to reflect on the power of embracing progress over perfection.

Climate change presents significant challenges for businesses across industries. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when considering the scale of the problem and the radical changes required to mitigate its effects. However, waiting for the perfect solution is no longer an option. Taking action is what truly matters.

Imagine a business landscape where everyone is waiting for the flawless sustainability strategy before making any changes. Progress would stall and our planet would suffer the consequences. In reality, progress is about taking initial steps, even if they are modest, to set the foundation for more substantial actions in the future.

So, what does progress look like in the business realm when it comes to climate change? It starts with implementing simple yet impactful initiatives, we believe. This could include energy-efficient upgrades to lighting systems, optimising supply chains to reduce carbon emissions, or embracing sustainable packaging practices. These measures may appear incremental but they demonstrate a commitment to change and sustainability. Alongside initial carbon reduction steps, though, it is essential to begin harnessing data. As the famous quote goes, “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.”

Progress also involves engaging with stakeholders. Businesses can collaborate with suppliers and partners to prioritise sustainability throughout the value chain. By setting shared goals and promoting transparency, companies can begin to inspire collective progress and drive positive change industry-wide.

Moreover, embracing progress means seizing opportunities to advocate for effective policies and regulations. Businesses can engage with policymakers, industry associations and, potentially, NGOs to influence and shape sustainable practices. By joining forces with like-minded organizations, we can amplify our impact and promote systemic change that benefits both the environment and the bottom line.

It's important to note that progress does not discount the need for innovation and ambitious solutions. Perfection remains a worthy goal. However, waiting for perfection to take action is a missed opportunity. Progress fuels innovation by creating a demand for better technologies, sustainable practices and ground-breaking solutions. By actively pursuing progress, businesses can become catalysts for change and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Furthermore, progress ignites a sense of purpose within organisations and can enhance brand reputation. Customers, employees and investors increasingly expect businesses to demonstrate commitment to sustainability. By showcasing progress and communicating the positive impacts achieved, companies can inspire stakeholders and attract new partners who share their values.

Were we fully prepared to begin measuring our carbon footprint in October 2022? Were we fully aware of the implications of making our carbon reduction commitments at that time? Will our first 12 months of data be perfect? In all cases, the answer is no. However, we are convinced, now more than ever before, that it was essential to just get started.

Let’s not forget that progress is a journey and each action contributes to a collective movement towards a greener future.

We will be posting our first update on our carbon emission reduction progress soon.
